How can we help?

Retaining the heritage of The Fisheries in Hackney, London

The Fisheries was built in the 1880s and named in honour of its long-standing tenant, R Green Fisheries. Acquired in 1987 by Warner Cox Ltd, who converted it into hi-spec apartments and co-work space while retaining its industrial heritage.

The brief

  1. Fabrication and installation of steel cantilever balconies for the apartments.
  2. Fabrication and installation of heritage industrial powder-coated steel balustrading throughout the communal areas of the complex.
  3. Fabrication and installation of the steel framework for the new atrium roof.

The Challenge

The challenge of working at height cannot be underestimated, installing cantilever balconies up to the 6th floor, and balustrading in the voids of the communal work areas. These are hidden challenges – the visible challenge was to retain the industrial heritage in the balustrading. For this we used standard Kee railing and bespoke wire mesh frames that followed the curves and rises of the concrete walkways.

The Result

The visual effect of the balustrading against a backdrop of sandblasted concrete ceilings, exposed brickwork and the natural light of full-height windows and the atrium ceiling retains the semi-industrial warehouse heritage, making it traditional yet modern.
